Blackbeard to be added to Pirates of the Caribbean rides at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom

Disney has revealed that the Blackbeard character featured in the latest movie based on Pirates of the Caribbean will soon be added to the ride itself.

Versions of the popular dark ride at Disneyland and Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom will be updated from May 20, 2011, to feature Blackbeard, played by Ian McShane in Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides. The pirate's face will appear on the waterfall in the ride's grotto scenes.

Blackbeard will replace Davy Jones on the waterfall, though the addition will only be temporary. Davy Jones is expected to return to the scene later this year, when the hype surrounding the latest movie has died down.

On Saturday, May 7, Disneyland hosted a star-studded premiere of On Stranger Tides, the fourth movie in the hugely popular series. The park is currently showing a special 3D preview of the movie in its Festival Arena.

The Pirates of the Caribbean movies have grossed $2.68 billion worldwide to date, and star Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Although the character was not originally featured in the ride, it has since been added to both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World versions.
