Busch Gardens Williamsburg looks set to open its new drop tower ride, Mach Tower, in time for the 2011 Memorial Day weekend.
Screamscape reports that the park has set Friday, May 27 as the official media day for the new ride, strongly suggesting that it will open to the public the following day. The date would be consistent with the park's previous announcement that Mach Tower would open in "late spring".
Mach Tower will be manufactured by Moser Rides and will see riders carried up a 246-feet-tall central column. The seats will rotate as the guests ascend, providing panoramic views of the entire park before they plummet at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour back down to the ground below.
Busch Gardens Williamsburg has promised that riders will experience some "surprises" when they reach the top of the tower, although the nature of these has not yet been confirmed. The park says that the full Mach Tower experience will last for 3 minutes, with the attraction able to hold to up 30 riders.
Also opening at the Busch Gardens Williamsburg in 2011 will be four 75-feet-tall waterslides at its Water Country USA water park. The "speed" slides will be collectively known as Vanish Point, and two of the four will feature glass booths at the summit from which riders will be dropped onto the slide via a trap door.
In development for the 2012 season at Busch Gardens Williamsburg is a new rollercoaster to replace Big Bad Wolf (which closed in 2009). The park has revealed few details of the new coaster, but does claim that it will feature multiple launches and an "autobahn" theme.
