Disney has released a new video offering a first look at the Ariel animatronic that will feature in The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure at Disney California Adventure.
The new ride is set to open on June 3, 2011 at Disneyland's sister park and will feature some of the most advanced animatronics yet seen in a theme park attraction. Much of the $100 million budget for The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure has been spent on animatronic effects, such as the "floating" hair seen on the Ariel model in the video below:
A large portion of The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure takes place in an "underwater" world, posing a challenge for Disney's Imagineers. In addition to effects on the animatronics themselves, the ride will make use of lighting and sound effects to create the impression of being immersed at the bottom of the ocean.
The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure will utilize an OmniMover ride system similar to that seen in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, with the clamshell-style vehicles having arrived in March. As in the Haunted Mansion, the vehicles will rotate to face the different scenes presented during the ride's circuit.
Disney California Adventure's new attraction will share a grand opening date with Star Tours: The Adventures Continue at neighboring Disneyland. A near-identical version of the attraction is due to open as part of an expanded Fantasyland at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in 2012, under the name Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid.
