A new video has been released showing the arrival of the clamshell vehicles for The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure, which is set open at Disney California Adventure on June 3, 2011.
The video, posted on the Disney Parks Blog and embedded below, gives an impression of the size and theming of the ride's vehicles. The clamshells will circulate on an OmniMover system similar to the one used in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, helping to ensure a rapid throughput of guests on the ride.
More than 100 clamshell vehicles will be featured in The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure, with colours including green, orange and marigold. Each can hold up to 3 people, depending on the size of the riders. As in the Haunted Mansion, the vehicles will rotate to face the different scenes presented during the ride's circuit.
The scenes are set to include some of Disney's most advanced animatronic characters yet, on which much of the attraction's estimated $100 million budget has been spent. The characters will help recreate a number of iconic scenes from the The Little Mermaid, and will be accompanied by musical numbers featured in the animated movie.
The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure will share a grand opening date with Star Tours: The Adventures Continue at neighboring Disneyland. It will become one of the headline attractions in the revamped Paradise Pier area of Disney California Adventure. A near-identical version of the attraction is due to open as part of an expanded Fantasyland at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in 2012, under the name Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid.
