Six Flags Discovery Kingdom has started work on removing Thomas the Tank Engine theming from the park, after its parent company confirmed the scrapping of several licensing deals.
Screamscape reports that the Thomas Town area of Discovery Kingdom has been closed during the Holiday In The Park Christmas events, in order to enable retheming to take place. The area will receive a generic "Whistle Stop Depot" theme, with Six Flags having opted not to license another brand to replace Thomas.
Thomas Town areas at a number of other Six Flags parks are also set to be stripped of their theming, including the child-friendly lands at Six Flags Magic Mountain and Six Flags New England. The largest Thomas Town in North America, located at Six Flags America, will be rebranded just five months after opening in June.
The Tony Hawk's Big Spin rollercoaster at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will also undergo a transformation, becoming simply Big Spin. Similar coasters at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Six Flags Over Texas and Six Flags St. Louis will all receive the same name change.
Six Flags runs 12 theme parks across North America and Mexico, along with a number of associated water parks. The company successfully restructured its debt in order to emerge from bankruptcy earlier this year, with a new board of directors and CEO being appointed to replace the previous management team.
