Toy Story Playland render

Disneyland Paris Resort has begun media previews of Toy Story Playland, ahead of the new land's scheduled opening at Walt Disney Studios on August 17, 2010.

The first report from the Toy Story-themed area emerged online today, on the Telegraph website. The fact that the author was able to experience at least one the area's new rides - half-pipe coaster RC Racer - will boost hopes that the new land will be "soft opened" to the public ahead of its scheduled opening date.

Toy Story Playland's three attractions have been seen undergoing testing during recent weeks, with Disneyland Paris hoping to open the area for at least part of the summer high season. An early soft opening would enable the resort to maximize cross-promotions with the Toy Story 3 movie, which is undergoing a staggered release throughout Europe during the month of July.

Few new details of highly-anticipated addition to Walt Disney Studios are revealed in the Telegraph's article, with the author instead focusing on the cultural differences between France and America. However, the entrance to the land (under a towering model of Buzz Lightyear) is described, along with the presence of large-scale toys throughout to give visitors the impression of being "toy-sized". Even litter bins and barriers have been designed to appear as if they were constructed by pieces from key character Andy's toy box - and with Andy not around, the toys are free to come to life.

The attractions in Toy Story Playland are each based on a character from the popular Pixar-created movie series. All of the rides are variations on traditional attractions seen at other parks around the world, including a spinning flat ride (Slinky Dog's Zig Zag Spin), a half-pipe rollercoaster (RC Racer) and a parachute drop tower (Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop).

Disney has faced criticism for not adding more ambitious attractions to Walt Disney Studios, including a version of the hugely popular Toy Story Mania (versions of which appear at Disney's California Adventure and Disney's Hollywood Studios, and will be added to Tokyo DisneySea from 2012). However, the park is strongly rumored to be adding a new $150 million dark ride based on Pixar's Ratatouille close to Toy Story Playland in 2012.

Theme Park Tourist will be visiting Disneyland Paris later this year and will feature a review of Toy Story Playland on the site shortly afterwards.

I'm heading to Disneyland Paris on July 31 and we're there until August 3. I hope there is a soft-opening and we can check it out while we're over there. I'll be shooting video and if it's open in any way, I'll be sure to give it a good look around and make the video and my impressions available

It's always difficult to call soft opening dates...we'll have our fingers crossed for you. That the rides are open and that real people have been on them is a positive sign.

Would love to hear your impressions if you are lucky enough to get in - or indeed your thoughts on how it looks from outside if it isn't open yet.
