The Disneyland Resort has launched a new Audio Description service, enabling visually impaired guests to hear a commentary on what is happening on a range of popular attractions.
The new service is offered through Disney's existing Handheld Device, which already offers amplified audio and text captioning services via an LCD display and headset. The devices are available from the Guest Relations offices at the entrances to the Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure parks, and require a fully-refundable $100 deposit to borrow.
The Disney Parks blog features an example of the Audio Description service as featured on the Haunted Mansion ride. A female voice outlines the current scene as the guest's "Doom Buggy" travels around the mansion, with descriptions such as "to our left a knight's armour guards an endless hallway, on our right wilted flower arrangements surround a coffin. An eerie light escapes as bony hands push up the lid."
Audio Description is currently offered on 19 attractions at Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure, including:
- Enchanted Tiki Room
- The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
- Alice in Wonderland
- It's a Small World
