Located in Gurnee, Illinois, Six Flags Great America is easily reachable from central Chicago. The park features the Six Flags chain's usual focus on extreme roller coasters, with its biggest draws including Superman: Ultimate Flight (a "flying" coaster), Raging Bull (a towering hypercoaster) and X-Flight (the second B&M Wing Rider coaster to open in the US). It is also home to a number of off-the-shelf children's rides, most of which are packed into the KIDZOPOLIS and Camp Cartoon areas. Great America is also home to Hurricane Harbor Water Park. Entry is free to Season Pass holders although there is an additional fee with day tickets.
Park History
Six Flags Great America was originally known as Marriott's Great America, and was one of two parks in a chain started by hotel chain Marriott (the other being California's Great America). It was acquired by Six Flags in 1984, with the other park now being owned by arch-rival Cedar Fair. The original emphasis on themed areas has diminished somewhat over the years, with Six Flags instead focusing on attracting the teen and young adult market with a selection of intense thrill rides. In 2012, the park added the X-Flight "Wing Rider" coaster, which does feature a number of theming elements to add to the experience.
