Gulliver's Matlock Bath (also known as Gulliver's Kingdom) is a theme park aimed at children aged 3-13. One of a trio of similar parks (the others are in Warrington and Milton Keynes), it has a strict policy of only admitting adults if they are accompanying a child. As its name suggests, the park hosts an area (Lilliput Land) dedicated to the classic Gulliver's Travels story, and also features lands themed around the wild west, a Victorian seaside resort and the time of the dinosaurs. As you'd expect given its target audience, the rides are fairly tame, with the most thrilling being the Switchback roller coaster.
Park History
Gulliver's Kingdom was the first of the Gulliver's parks to open, in 1978. It has remained in the hands of its founder, Ray Phillips, ever since. Originally based entirely around a model village located on a steep hillside, it has expanded gradually over the years to add additional areas and attractions and is now one of the largest child-focused theme parks in the UK. The Switchback roller coaster is named after the Switchback Railway that was a popular attraction in Matlock Bath during Victorian times.
