Universal has reached a point where it has to make a decision of what it wants to be: A Disneyland-style park that puts immersion and freshness ahead of variety and volume, or a Walt Disney World-style resort that caters to every vacation whim and encourages week-long stays. We are only a few days removed from the release of the annual Global Attractions Attendance Report, the seminal theme park data evaluation from the Themed Entertainment Association, which is effectively the facts and figures bible of the theme park industry. Even though the data presented requires a bit of extrapolation and projection and is thereby not 100 percent accurate, it’s still the primary industry resource regarding theme park attendance for a given year.

Films can be art. Photographs can be art. Video games can be art. Even selfies can be art (no, seriously). And, I would argue, theme park attractions can be art – particularly the ones you'd find at Disney parks around the world or Universal's parks in Orlando and Los Angeles. No, maybe they aren't on the same level as the Mona Lisa or the Sistine Chapel, but they're a bit closer than you may think.
