Disney Imagineers constantly push forward the edges of technology, always yearning for the most cutting-edge illusions and effects. Fantasmic! is no exception. When Fantasmic! was in production, Imagineers needed a way for characters and images to be displayed for an audience that wraps almost 180 degrees around the main stage, but the stage was surrounded by water! Ingenious imagineers tinkered with projection technology until they discovered that they could project onto screens made entirely of water! Imagineers patented the invention, but they weren’t done. 2D screens do not complete a massive nighttime spectacular. To add to the digital effects on the water screens, “dancing fountains” and water cannons were mounted at the base of the screen. Precursors to the models that would eventually travel to Disney California Adventure and Shanghai Disney, these fountains were capable of spraying water dozens of feet in the air and using LED technology to color that water. Fantasmic! created water effects that would eventually spawn World of Color and further enhance shows in Disney parks around the world.

4.A new kind of nighttime spectacular

Fantasmic! is Disney’s first step into a different kind nighttime spectacular. Synchronizing fireworks, water fountains, live stage performance, projections, and music into one epic event, Fantasmic! was a beta test for the modern nighttime spectaculars that light up the sky at Disney resorts around the globe like Rivers of Light, Disneyland Forever and Happily Ever After. Fantasmic! was the beginning of the new Disney night life.

Fantasmic! lives in in Disney Parks around the globe. The next time you find yourself at Disneyland, Disney's Hollywood Studios, or the Tokyo Disney Resort, save an extra hour to enjoy the nighttime spectacular that changed Disney Parks forever.
