Things might have changed but Universal definitely DOES have TM blockout days, especially during peak season and HHN and Mardi Gras big name concerts. Still considerably less blockouts than Disney CMs. The rest is still true.

As a relative of someone who is a former CM & now a TM, the hotel discounts at WDW are rarely available, or only available for the "club level" rooms, or the most expensive rooms. Only a small limited number of rooms are made available to CMs & their families, so unless one books WAY in advance, good luck getting a room that one would actually ordinarily book anyway. Granted, one can get a deluxe club level room for a "high moderate" price, but try finding a true "moderate" room, or a "value" room using the CM discount.

I am not sure about employee benifits, but as a guest with three disabled persons (two deaf and one mobility impaired), Universal wins without a doubt. They allowed us to reserve a mobile cart, Disney did not. they offered a sign interpreter, Disney did not. Disney SHOVED one of the children with us during the parade which THEY said kids could come out to the street to dance. Disney had not closed the autograph line until AFTER our kids were in line, yet when two of the kids in our group had waited for more than 30 min, then they were told Goofy would not sign autographs for them. Universal let us hang talk to the cast of a show as long as we wanted, take pictures, etc. Disney would not let the employee buy us gifts with his discount, Universal let the employee buy his stuff and all of our stuff with his discount. Disney passes for disabled required waiting an hour or more and coming back whereas Universal's pass allowed us to just go to a shorter line. I could go on, but as a guest visiting both in the same week (Mardi Gras), I would choose Universal over Disney in a heartbeat. They treated disabled guests as people instead of a nuissance.

well another chance to read through Univeral vs Disney. All I can say is that some people enjoy UNI more and others enjoy Disney more. I can't believe I read all of the comments. It always ends in a stalemate any way. Just be glad you both have a job.

Amen to that!!!

There's a few things that shouldn't be overlooked here. CM hotel rates range from 50% minimum to 60%, depending on the time of the year. Most of the year, WDW hotels are at 95% capacity, so they're nearly full almost all the time. And when it comes to the admission to special events, you have to realize that Disney employs over 76,000 CM's in Central Florida, so of course they can't give them free admission to these popular separately ticketed events. Universal doesn't even come close to that number.

I have been with Dis for over 25 years...they have taken anything good away from the cast. Food in the cast cafeteria is over what most people make an hour which is crimmal, ( and was affordable when Dis ran them), they have blocked out 4 of 12 months of the year for the gate pass usage.....there are some perks locally in different departments, but these folks don't want to spend a dime on anything or lose a dime on anything that would or could make someone's day happier and affordable. The college program has it the worst... They have not always been like this though. Can you believe they use to shut the park down on Xmas eve so the employees could have the holiday off? Or closed the kingdom to have a holiday party just for the cast and their families? Yes, meals did cost 3 and 4 bucks for cast...there was a discounted gas station in the employee parking lot....

Correction in your article...Disney also does movie screenings for Cast Members...they may not be as frequent, but they do occur. More often in Disneyland than WDW, but they do occur.

Yeah well free movies screenings are all fine and dandy, but u have to stand in line for like 3 hours and most if not all the time they run out of passes.I think they need a new way to do this so all that want to see movie can

In reply to by Mike Cruickshank (not verified)

Wrong... Usually in line for about an hour max. The only way to make it so everyone could go would be close down the theater and use all screens.. they already utilize about 3 screens for TM previews as is.

Does Disney do free CM screenings?

Please do your research before writing articles! 1-No we don't get Turkeys, who cares, the ones they give out are tiny. 2- Not So Scary and Disney's Christmas events are filed with infinitely more to do than Universal. 3- we have a several company stores with vastly bigger discounts as well as grocery items. 4- 35%-75% discounts on resort rooms depending on season. 5- universal allows employees to join in Mardi Gras parades voluntarily. 6- the perks for WDW cast members greatly exceeds those of Universal. From internal transfers to the ability to move up in the company at a accelerated rate. Just so you know the next time you decide to write something completely inaccurate.

In reply to by Jason (not verified)

1-The turkeys are actually never less than 13 lbs.
2- That's great not so scary has a lot of stuff to do.. Halloween Horror Nights is the #1 ranked Halloween event for many years running, and Uni TM's can go every night for free if they want. Also can go to Rock the Universe, Mardi Gras concerts, Summer concerts, etc.
3 - ok
4 - 35%-75% is a big margin... UNI TM's pay no more than $75 for suites at any of the hotels no matter what the season. Only downside would be rooms not being available during busy seasons, but prices don't change if it is available.
5-yes it's voluntary, but you can also transfer and work mardi gras if you want and there are a multitude of roles. Or sometimes volunteering on a float could be fun, and at least UNI TM's have that opportunity is what's the point.
6 - internal transfers? UNI does the same all the time. Moving up in the company? That has nothing to do with whatever company you're working for, it's all up to you to make yourself move up no matter where you work.

I live in NJ but would love the chance to work for universal. I was there 3 weeks ago and all the tms were so nice and friendly. That's my dream live in Florida and work for universal.

Also Universal does a thing called Party Patrol. You can get free candy, drinks, chips, play games, soda, and various other items occasionally on your stroll into work.

Not to mention Attractions TM's get their own award shows yearly. Your venue gets to make a funny video for all to see. You also get to vote on best trainers, best themer, best lead, mr. and ms. IOA and USF. It's a lot of fun and I believe you get free drinks during it too.

As for Disney doing more? Yeah no. I've worked there and the only special experience I've ever had was a GFC. yaaay :/

My friend who works at WDW attractions has award ceremonies. I've also got free meals from Disney while working. Plus I've had friends tell me they make less than Disney in the same position.

Universal demonstrates a great respect for their team members. Whether it is in scheduling, training, career advancement I have found their treatment of employees to be incredibly professional and personalized. This is truly a company where you do not feel like a number. Your time and talents are valued. I have yet to meet one leader or administrative staff that suffers from ivory tower syndrome.

Amy if I'm not mistaken you are the Amy that just taught my guest service class! You are so awesome! I'm a full time team member and a seasonal cast memeber and by far universal is such an amazing company to work for! One main benefit you left out is the tuition reimbursement! They are the reason that I am able to go to graduate school!

Disney does have a place where you can buy groceries cheap.it also gives you hotel discounts.

In reply to by Sarah (not verified)

Yes, but only about 40% off. We get rooms at the hard rock hotel and the others for almost 80% off depending on the season.

In reply to by Sarah (not verified)

The hotel argument is Universal offers flat rate TM discount prices all year. The only disadvantage would be rooms not being available during peak seasons. But no matter the hotel and/or time of year, Uni TM's get a drastically reduced price.

The counter argument is Disney only offers semi discounts, and they vary. The UNI price for TM's is like $50-$75 a night no matter room occupancy, btw.

Would like to get a job as a Security officer

Little do you know Disney does all of those things and a multidute of other things that NEVER get known to the public or even some cm.I think you need to do a little more digging before you just put 1 before the other

Yes Disney has cast connection and property control, but UO does focus more on the TM then Disney does on the CM. I have worked at Disney for 3 years and currently work at UO. One huge difference is that UO says upfront that they do not want to make money off of its TMs. This also means that they offer food at-cost in their cafeterias whereas Disneys prices for the CMs food has been and continues to be outrageous. Also an on site pharmacy and full general practitioners office that offers Florida Hospital quality care and discounted percriptions for TMs family is a huge perk. As someone who has worked for both, UO does have a better focus on its TMs.

Disney does have an onsite pharmacy and doctors office too.

In reply to by juli (not verified)

Well since you know, what are the extra perks that Disney gives to their cast members Juli?

In reply to by juli (not verified)

I worked for Disney for 8 years. My first year with Universal I got a merit based raise for the ENTIRE amount I got over those 8 years with Disney. Also they charge nearly $60 a person for MNSSHPs and half are blocked out for the discount. We get ALL of HHN for free, plus tickets discounted to nearly half off for guests.

Disney World has Property Control and Cast Connections where cast members can get merchandise for a discount and get some groceries too.

In reply to by Juell (not verified)

We have a big store like that too. Old, unbought merch we get a 70% discount on.

In reply to by Juell (not verified)

Most of the time cast connection is selling stuff nearly at full price. Like shirts that were $21 now are $15. We get shirts that were $21 for $3

In reply to by Juell (not verified)

This is true, Juell. However, Universal has the curse of size and I can simply pick up stuff at USTOP (groceries) and USHOP (property control) on my way out of work. It located centrally at Costuming which all TM head too.

Unlike DHS, Epcot, and DAK CM who have to drive to MK for Cast Connection and Property Control. But again, curse of size is its blessing
