Universal Orlando Resort has a lot of projects in the works right now. From the Volcano Bay park opening in less than a year, to the 2017 opening of Race through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon. Looking even farther out there’s also the opening of Fast and Furious: Supercharged, which was recently delayed to 2018.
However, though there are some big things on the horizon for Universal Orlando Resort, there are also a number of projects in the short term that we are expecting updates on, hopefully in the next few days or weeks! If you are a Universal fan, here are the big announcements we're hoping to hear before the end of the summer!
1. An official opening date for Skull Island: Reign of Kong and The Incredible Hulk
This summer promised to be a big one for Orlando-area parks, and though Walt Disney World has already debuted over half a dozen new attractions in the past month (with somewhat mixed results), the two attractions that Universal Orlando Resort was counting on to bolster summer attendance have yet to see an official opening date, and we're almost at the halfway point of the busy summer season.
The first of these is of course Skull Island: Reign of Kong, which has actually been in technical rehearsal for nearly a month now, allowing a select number of guests to ride during afternoon operations on most days. And while guests lucky enough to experience this ride during its soft opening have been largely reporting a stable ride experience without breakdowns, Universal still has declined to confirm an official grand opening date for this much-anticipated attraction, much to the chagrin of those who have been following the development of this attraction. While some recent missteps at Walt Disney World have shown why having a technical rehearsal is very important for new attractions, it feels like Universal’s soft opening period for this attraction has gone on forever, and many are wondering why Universal hasn't confirmed an opening date yet for this attraction. Maybe the controversial use of scareactors in the queue is to blame.
Of course, on the other side of Islands of Adventure is The Incredible Hulk, which has been closed for refurbishment since last year, when the entire track was replaced. Though the track has been back for several months now (and we know more about the other changes coming to the ride when it reopens), Universal has yet to confirm exactly when guests will be able to Hulk out on this attraction once again. Extensive testing on the new ride vehicles has been going on since late last month, and late-night guests have spotted dramatic new lighting changes on the launch tube, but even with all of these developments, Universal still hasn’t confirmed an official re-launch date for this fan favorite roller coaster, which is still listed as re-opening sometime in “Summer 2016”.
