5 Amazing Attractions That Have Already Gone Extinct in 2017By Amanda Kondolojy, Monday, January 9, 2017 01:58
3. Stitch's Great Escape
Location: Magic Kingdom
Status: Last day of operation was January 3, 2017
Though you can still find Stitch's Great Escape on the official list of Walt Disney World park attractions, as of January 3, 2017 this attraction has closed for regular park operation, and there is no indication that is will ever reopen. As of right now, the Walt Disney World official park calendar stretches until mid-July, and shows this attraction closed every single day for the next six months, which likely means we are dealing with a situation like what happened with the Wonders of Life pavilion, which was taken apart piece by piece behind the scenes after a brief period of seasonal operation. Though its doubtful that many will miss this attraction, it certainly looks like it is closed for good, and we're hopeful that Disney will make this development official soon so that they can perhaps start working on something new for this space in the coming year.
4. The Magic Kingdom Welcome Show
Location: Magic Kingdom
Status: Last performance was Sunday, January 8, 2017
One of the most storied traditions at the Magic Kingdom is the park opening show. Previously, guests who woke up early have been able to see a short show at the Magic Kingdom's Main Street USA train station featuring their favorite characters welcoming them to the park. However, this train station show was canceled last week, and had its last performance on January 8, 2017
However, the good news is that Disney immediately replaced this show with a brand new welcome show actually inside the park. Now that guests are able to hang out on Main Street USA prior to park opening, a new welcome show on the Castle Forecourt Stage is now being performed that features a Royal Herald welcoming a few familiar characters to the stage, and officially opening the park so “the magic can begin!”
5. Margret Almer & the Bavarian Band
Status: Final performance was January 1, 2017
Though they weren't the most high profile act at Epcot's World Showcase, Margret Almer & the Bavarian Band developed a small fansbase last year when they made their official Epcot debut in the summer of 2016. Through the fall, this band entertained guests strolling through Epcot (most recently during last year's edition of the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival), and developed a small fanbase in that time. However, this group sadly said Auf Wiedersehen to Epcot on January 1, 2017, and was replaced on January 8, 2017 by Oktoberfest band Weis n Buam.
Though it is not uncommon to see a large volume of closings after the holiday season ends, we're expecting to see a lot more as 2017 goes on, with what's left of Innoventions expected to close in the first half of the year, and rumors swirling about the potential demise of Dragon Challenge at Universal's Islands of Adventure and of course the uncertain future of Ellen's Energy Adventure at Epcot, 2017 could be the first year in quite a long time that we see more closings than openings.
Will you miss any of the attractions we've already lost in 2017?
