Theme park news round-up - January 9, 2013

Holiday World's new CEO will be aiming to continue the regional park's recent run of success.

The Universal Orlando Resort has confirmed the full concert line-up for its annual Mardi Gras events, which will kick off on February 9. Meanwhile, Star Wars fans are salivating at the prospect of a "boutique park" themed around the films, which is rumored to be under consideration for Walt Disney World, and Holiday World has moved to install a new CEO.

Universal Orlando Resort

The Universal Orlando Resort has revealed the full line-up for its Mardi Gras 2013 concerts, with a range of popular acts set to perform. Household names including Pitbull, Demi Lovato and American Idol winner Phillip Phillips are among the acts that will take to the stage at Universal Studios Florida.

Walt Disney World

Disney is rumored to have assigned a small number of its Imagineers to a project to build a "boutique theme park" based on the Star Wars movies at Walt Disney World.

Disneyland Resort

The Blue Sky Cellar at Disney California Adventure is now closed, and will reopen on January 19 boasting concept artwork and models for the under-construction Fantasy Faire at Disneyland. It will also offer a preview of the Mickey and the Magical Map show, which will debut in the Fantasyland Theater this summer.

Located in one of the wine cellars of the park's Golden Vine Winery, the constantly-refreshed exhibit chronicles the changes at Disney California Adventure with a nod to the past and future, displaying concept art, models, and interviews with imagineers.

Cedar Point

Cedar Point has revealed that construction on its new GateKeeper roller coaster is on schedule, with the world's longest winged coaster set to debut on May 11, 2013.

Holiday World

Dan Koch, the brother of the late Will, has stepped down as Holiday World's president and CEO to return to running his law practice in Florida. Matt Eckert, a veteran at the park, will take over both roles.
