AMC Theaters has revealed that it to open a new IMAX cinema screen in Anaheim, sparking strong rumors that it will be located in the Disneyland Resort's Downtown Disney district.
The area already hosts a multi-screen movie theater that is operated by AMC, making it the most likely location for the IMAX screen. It is set to be one of eight new installations of the technology at AMC locations across the US, at least three of which are due to open by the end of 2012.
The new screens will enable AMC to show films in the proprietary IMAX format, which offers a much larger screen size and higher resolution than traditional projection systems.
Many IMAX theaters focus on showing custom-made, limited-duration movies that were produced specifically for the format. However, major blockbusters such as the Harry Potter series are sometimes released in IMAX format alongside the standard versions.
