Reprieve for Aladdin at Disney's California Adventure as Toy Story musical is shelved
Submitted by Nick Sim on Thursday, May 13, 2010 18:49Plans to replace the Aladdin musical at Disney's California Adventure with a show based on the Toy Story movies have been shelved following an outcry from fans.
"Disney's Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular" will now continue to play in the park's Hyperion Theater beyond its scheduled August 15 closing date, although Disney has not ruled out replacing it eventually. "Toy Story - The Musical" will not therefore be opening in its place in 2011 as originally announced.
In a post on its official blog, Disney cited overwhelming demand from fans for Aladdin to remain as the reason behind the decision. However, it did warn that construction is scheduled to start in the area of the Hyperion Theater on August 15, and that Aladdin performances may still be impacted by this work.
The Toy Story show would not have been entirely new, as it already features on the Disney Wonder cruise ship. The Broadway-style show features six original songs, plus Randy Newman's "You've Got a Friend in Me" - the signature tune of the movie.
The Aladdin show has been a fixture at Disney's California Adventure since 2003, and will now extend its run into an eighth year.
