An "augmented reality" map of Universal's upcoming Wizarding World of Harry Potter is available in the January 28 edition of USA Today.
The Wizarding World is due to open this spring at Islands of Adventure in Orlando, and Universal has launched the unique promotion with the newspaper to help build anticipation levels. A static map can be viewed in the paper, but when viewed on a reader's webcam it will seemingly explode into life on their computer screen.
Augmented reality techniques are used to layer computer-generated images onto the map, allowing viewers to take a closer look at the Potter land from different angles. As well as showing 3D images of the Wizarding World's major landmarks (including Hogwarts Castle and the Hogwarts Express train), the software also employs some Potter "magic" to make banners in the map flap in the wind when a user blows into their computer's microphone.
Universal recently began recruiting staff for the Wizarding World, suggesting that it is on track to open the new area in its original spring timeframe. This should mean an opening prior to the key Memorial Day weekend at the end of May, although there are indications that the area may be open by April.
Full details of the attractions, restaurants and shops that will form part of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter can be found in TPT's recent news story.
