The Blue Horizons dolphin show will open at SeaWorld San Diego in 2010, replacing the Dolphin Discovery show which has now closed.

The existing dolphin showcase ran for the last time on September 7 . It will make way for Blue Horizons, which has been running at sister park SeaWorld Orlando since 2005. The new version is scheduled to open in May 2010 - probably around the Memorial Day weekend. In the meantime, a special dolphin show will take place in Shamu Stadium beginning in November 2009.

As well as replacing the old show, SeaWorld also plans to upgrade the Dolphin Stadium to accommodate Blue Horizons. As well as adding an additional 700 seats, the park will upgrade the sound system, add high-tech water features and a construct an entirely new set.

Blue Horizons, which proved to be a popular addition in Orlando, blends tricks and stunts by bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales with performances by human acrobats. The story centres around Marina, a young girl whose colorful imagination is the inspiration for the action. It features stunts both above and under the water, with exotic birds also getting in on the action.

Dolphin Discovery debuted in 1996 and was one of the longest-running shows in SeaWorld's history.
